Chapter Five

“How’s the noble quest for a family going?” Kalli asked. She’d been out that morning to get a new phone, and called Dana immediately to let her know they didn’t have to communicate through Boyd’s phone anymore.

“I don’t want to get into that right now.” Dana sighed and it turned into a yawn. “What’re you doing?”

Kalli didn’t like the sound of defeat in Dana’s voice, but tingled at the thought that Dana called just to talk about nothing—that Kalli was who she turned to when she needed to relax. Kalli shifted her weight on the bed and tried to find the right button on the remote in the dark. “Just seeing what’s on TV.”

“Hmm,” said Dana. “I’ve found some stupid film with Jennifer Lopez.”

“Oh yeah,” Kalli said, finding the same channel. “Monster-in-Law. I love this film.”

“You do?” Dana sounded amused.

“Yeah. Two fabulous divas tearing chunks out of each other. What’s not to love?”

“You’re very odd, you know.”

“So I’ve been told.”

“I should be embarrassed by you,” Dana said around a long yawn. “But, strangely, I’m not.”

“I have the body of a goddess. It makes up for my personality.”

“Really?” said Dana, perking up. “Goddess, huh?”

“Yeah. Well, so people tell me.”

“Apparently people tell you a lot of things.”

Kalli smiled. “You’ll just have to judge for yourself.”

“You should send me a picture.”

“Uh, how about no? You’ll have to wait and see.”

“I’ll send you one in return,” Dana wheedled. “Anything you like…”

Kalli squeezed her eyes shut. “As tempting as that is—and it really, really is—I say we wait for the real thing.”

Dana sighed. “Six days.” Then she yawned again, so powerfully Kalli thought she heard her jaw click.

“Hey, I should let you go. You need to sleep.”

“Yeah,” said Dana. “But no. Let’s see how this movie ends.”

“I know how it ends.”

“Well, I don’t. Any film where J-Lo’s getting her face smacked into a cake has to be worth seeing through, right?”

“And you need me to watch it with you?”

“…I get the free minutes.”

“Okay,” said Kalli, burrowing down under the blanket. “I’ll stay.”

“Good,” said Dana, and Kalli smiled.

Dana fell asleep before the film ended, but Kalli didn’t mind. Her own eyes slipped shut to the sound of Dana breathing softly and peacefully into her ear.

“I added you on Facebook,” Kalli said the following night. “Now you have to join my Mafia.”

“You don’t really bother with that shit, do you?”

“Hell yeah, I do. Don Morgan owns, like, half of Facebook.”

“Wow,” said Dana. “That’s some achievement.”

“Join my Mafia,” Kalli said. “Do it.”

“Will you have me killed if I don’t?”

“Yes,” said Kalli. “Fish food.”

“You fail at intimidation.”

“I could squash you with my little finger.”

“Or with your ego.”

“Hey!”

“Mafia Wars does funny things to you,” Dana said.

Kalli sighed. “I know. I go crazy on the power.”

“Hmm,” said Dana. “That might be fun. You know, for future reference.”

Kalli sat up straighter on the bed, instantly a million times more alert. “What d’you mean?”

“Well, I’m pretty assertive myself, you know. Never been with a woman who could…take control. In bed.
